History of Geriatric Medicine in the UK
- by Prof John Brocklehurst (DVD produced by Dr Mahendra Gonsalkorale)

I am pleased to announce that the DVD “A Brief History of Geriatric Medicine in the UK”, by Prof John Brocklehurst, premiered at the North Western Branch of the BGS during September, is now on sale.
Mahendra Gonsalkorale

The proceeds will be donated towards the charity Research into Ageing. The current Chairman of this group in Manchester is former President of the BGS, Prof Arup Banerjee. John Brocklehurst is still active within the RIA.

In this DVD, John describes, from a personal point of view, the origins and development of geriatric medicine in the UK It is not meant to be a comprehensive account. The foreword is by Dr Jeremy Playfer and the main body of the presentation is in four parts, where Prof Brocklehurst is interviewed by Dr Gonsalkorale. Prof Brocklehurst refers to many of the pioneers of our specialty, going on to describe the development of psychogeriatrics and academic geriatric medicine. He gives a brief account of the history of the BGS, ending with an overall summary and his vision of the future. Throughout the DVD, John utilises archived pictures which he has collected over the years. This should be compulsory viewing for all aspiring geriatricians in training.

It is difficult to capture in this DVD just how important a character he [Prof Brocklehurst] was and how he has contributed to the development of geriatric medicine for over 20 years.

It is extremely easy for history to evaporate, yet history is what drives our passion.

I think that geriatricians in the BGS are lucky in that we collected a good deal of archived material. One of our past presidents, Mike Denham, did his PhD on the history of Geriatric Medicine and Mahendra's initiative in capturing the experience of John Brocklehurst should be of great value to all our younger geriatricians.

I hope our Trainees in particular, will benefit from this DVD by appreciating the richness and depth of our history and that they themselves will go on to be pioneers for the next generation, benefiting older people by enriching and adding to the tradition in their turn.
